The UK has ratified STANAG 4439 Ed 3.
The UK IM Policy is set out in the following documents:
- DSA03 OME, the MOD OME Safety Management System, specifies the Defence Safety and Environment Authority (DSEA) requirements for the highest standards of safety and environmental management. Upload Part 1 (July 2021)
- Def Stan 07-85 Design Requirements for Weapons and Associated Systems. Available from DSTAN in Glasgow.
Since 2001 UK IM policy has stipulated that all new munition requirements must be compliant with the requirements of STANAG 4439. For legacy munitions there is a policy of progressive transition to IM embodying ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) principles.
IM Implementation Strategy and Plan (IMIS/IMIP)
The IM Assessment Panel (IMAP) has completed the task of assessing the IM signatures of all munitions in the inventory with the exception of a small number of pyrotechnic stores and CAD/PADs.
Apart from these exceptions the IMIP now includes every munition type in the inventory (600 total).
Of these 136 munitions fall into Categories 1-3 where IM insertion should be considered as a potential option.
